The Vinalhaven Veterans Memorial was dedicated on July 7^th – the culmination of a three-year design collaboration between Susan Rodriguez, island leaders, and volunteers. Crafted of local Vinalhaven granite, the memorial draws on local tradition, skills, and resources. The ceremony was attended by many island veterans, as well as representatives of the Maine State government.

The ceremony called attention to the notable civic dedication of the island community, which has heroically and selflessly served the country in times of need. The memorial was conceived and built largely through volunteered time, resources, and expertise, and is a testament to the continuing vitality and generosity of the community.

The Staten Island Courthouse, designed by Susan Rodriguez while a design partner at Ennead, was the subject of a recent Open House New York tour as a part of their Spaces of Justice series.

The tour, led by Susan Rodriguez and Christopher Halloran of Ennead, allowed attendees to see the inner workings of the courthouse. Heralded as a model for an improved court system, the courthouse is equipped with meeting spaces for attorneys and clients, light-filled courtrooms, and comfortable waiting and deliberating areas for the jury. The transparency of the building symbolizes fairness and openness before the law.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new United States Courthouse for the Middle District of Pennsylvania was held on June 25^th in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The groundbreaking comes after a nearly fifteen-year design process led by Susan Rodriguez as a design partner at Ennead.

The 250,000 square foot building will be located at a vital intersection in midtown Harrisburg. The design and siting of the courthouse embodies the important confluence of the Federal judiciary and the community it serves to create a striking civic landmark. The Honorable Christopher C. Conner, the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, delivered the keynote address and summed up the principles that have guided the design of the building, saying “We will have a public building which will generate a strong sense of civic pride and reflect the dignity and stability of a fair and impartial judiciary.”

Lycée Français de New York has been awarded a 2018 SARA | NY Design Award for an addition to the main Lycée building. Both the main building, which was completed in 2003, and the 2016 addition were designed by Susan T. Rodriguez as Design Partner at Ennead Architects. The addition creates a new identity for the school on York Avenue, reinforcing its relationship to the neighborhood and city.

The sun-filled office is in a landmarked building built for Cornell Iron Works in 1891, making it the oldest building in the district. A renovation and restoration effort at the North Transept of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is nearing completion, nearly 17 years after the structure was severely damaged by a five-alarm fire in December 2001. The work by Susan T. Rodriguez / Ennead Architects encloses the North Transept with a new roof, protecting the interior which had been open to the elements since the fire. Built on the historic walls of the Cathedral, the roof protects the original structure and paves the way for future work on the interior space.

Vinalhaven to honor World War II vets with new memorial

The plan for a new downtown arts and education center in Waterville, Maine was announced on March 2, 2018 by Colby College and Waterville Creates!. The design by Susan T Rodriguez | Architecture • Design and GO Logic will transform and expand the historic building at the intersection of Main Street and Castonguay Square. The new building will establish a new center for the arts in downtown Waterville, incorporating spaces for the Colby College Museum of Art, The Maine International Film Festival, and the Waterville Opera House. A café and educational spaces are also included in the design.

The project contributes to Colby College’s on-going effort to revitalize historic downtown Waterville through collaboration with the city, private donors, and other public groups.

Situated by the Kennebec River, Waterville was once a major hub of manufacturing and shipping. This history is still visible in the impressive brick buildings that make up much of Waterville’s downtown. The revitalization effort by Colby College has focused on creating links between campus and downtown, while also establishing Waterville as a destination city. Other projects include a new hotel and student housing.

The new Center for Human Ecology at the College of the Atlantic presents a unique opportunity to create College of the Atlantic’s first purpose-built academic building, one that celebrates the college’s history of environmental leadership and embodies its unique curricular mission in its architecture, landscape, and its precedent-setting building performance and sustainability. The project holds great promise to create a new threshold to the campus, while strengthening and renewing its connections to Frenchman Bay, Acadia National Park, and the surrounding Mount Desert Island community. Capturing the essence of the project as a unique intersection of history, place, campus culture, ecology, and academic inquiry will be fundamental to developing a vision for the project as a vital new academic center, gateway to the campus, and a distinctly visible symbol of the college and its mission.

The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum, designed by Susan Rodriguez / Polshek Partnership in 2008, recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary. The Museum recognizes the mile-stone with a museum-wide, year-long campaign entitled “A Year of Yes: Reimagining Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum,” which focuses on the often-forgotten feminist artists of the past century.
